Part of what makes Canada’s hand strong is what is being built.
A pipeline between Alberta and Wyoming may be close to reaching the commercial commitments it needs to move forward, according to BNN Bloomberg sources. Those sources name Cenovus, CNRL, Tamarack Valley, Whitecap Resources, and Strathcona Resources among the shippers that have committed. The project has also received a U.S. presidential permit. For a pipeline to advance, producers need to commit to shipping enough volume to make it economically viable. That threshold is now within reach.
And Ontario broke ground on the first new nuclear reactor in more than 30 years at Darlington, the first of four planned small modular reactors. Small modular reactors are nuclear reactors built in smaller, standardized units rather than large custom installations.
The benefits of these decisions will be felt now and for generations.
“We’re building for our children,” said Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce at the CPW Summit in Toronto last month. “We’re expending the capital, political and financial, to build because we think there is strength for the market, for investors and for families to know that you have access to reliable, affordable and clean power for another 80 years.”
Several significant developments are underway that will shape how strong that hand actually is. Click to learn more as we unpack news from this month:
