LNG makes history in Canada

by | July 2025

A historic milestone was reached this week as Canada’s first-ever shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) departed from the LNG Canada terminal in Kitimat, British Columbia, bound for buyers in Asia. This moment marks Canada’s official entry into the global LNG market, an achievement that’s been years in the making and carries significant implications not only for Canadian energy, but also for the national economy and engaged women.

This is a moment worth celebrating, as we know engaged women support the export of LNG to displace higher emitting fuel sources like coal in other parts of the world, and 80 per cent agree energy and trade partnerships will help secure Canada’s future through energy independence.

By shipping LNG from the West Coast to Asia, Canada is connecting its vast natural gas resources to more countries seeking reliable and affordable energy alternatives. This will position Canada as a dependable energy partner in an increasingly interconnected world and expand our trade opportunities.

This first successful shipment reflects more than 10 years of preparation and collaboration with government, industry, and coastal First Nations to ensure vessel operations are safe and to help minimize impacts on the environment and coastal communities. The project involved over 50,000 Canadians in its construction, supported 25,000 more through the Coastal GasLink pipeline, created over 300 permanent jobs, and awarded $5.8 billion in contracts, all driving inclusive growth and long-term opportunity.

This historic moment to be celebrated is an example of how Canada can diversify its trading partners and reduce reliance on the U.S. while providing an energy source that can help other countries lower their emissions and positively contribute to reductions globally. Canada Powered by Women offers sincere congratulations to LNG Canada and to so many who made this shipment possible.
